October 9th, 2024

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.  But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

-Luke 10:38-42

Martha was busy as a bee.

The phrase “busy as a bee” was first introduced way back in 1392, in Geoffrey Chaucer’s classic “The Canterbury Tales,” and the phrase is still popular today.

In our Gospel reading Sunday we meet Martha, a woman who lovingly invited Jesus into her home.  She wanted to make Jesus comfortable so she went right to work.  She was cooking and cleaning, and baking and preparing.  Martha was buzzing around the kitchen like a bumbling bee bouncing from one pollen-filled flower to another.  Her sister, Mary, was sitting at the feet of Jesus listening.

Martha was furious, and said “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  She, understandably, wanted help, but Jesus wanted something different.  Jesus wanted Martha to be still, he wanted her undivided attention.

Sometimes, we are so busy trying to make things “just perfect”, we miss Jesus’ words.  We feel like we must see the latest news, read the latest post, respond to the latest text, and prepare a wonderful meal for our family… but there is little time for God’s Word.  So family devotions can wait, Bible study is just too much, and coming to church can wait until after “the season.”  There is just too much to do.  We, like Martha, are busy as bees. Preparations are important, of course, but our Lord makes it clear that nothing is more important than The Word of God.

Today, just sit at the feet of the Lord, and hear his words of eternal life for you - it’s what Jesus wants.

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
