Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.
-Psalm 143:8-
For many years, I start my day with David’s prayer from Psalm 143 and a cup of coffee. Sitting on my bed, peeking below the blinds in the window, I look at the sun’s light slowly turning night into another day given to me by my Lord. I don’t know exactly when I started this morning routine, it has been so long, but I do know I started praying this prayer when I could no longer rely on myself. It was when I started my undergraduate as a grown man with four kids, knowing many years of school and seminary would not be possible on my own. How would I provide for my babies and wife? How would I have the strength to study, work, and care for my family? I knew I could not do this on my own. I needed help!
In my reading one day, I read David’s words in Psalm 143 and I have been praying this prayer ever since… followed by a cup of coffee, of course. In this beautiful Psalm, David prays for deliverance from enemies and requests divine leading from the Lord. David first presents his prayer requesting help and acknowledges his dire situation. In verse 8, then, declares his trust in the unfailing love that only God can give. David follows this with a request that God shows him “the way I should go.” David concludes this single verse with his declaration of trust in the Lord not only for the present day but for his entire life.
You have moments in your life of utter desperation knowing your hard work and dedication just won’t cut it either. This is a gift! In times of desperation, it may not seem like it, but God is showing you what He showed me all those years ago- to rely fully and completely on Him. Psalm 143:8 is a wonderful way to start another day the Lord has given you. I love my coffee, but trust me this prayer to my Lord is better every morning.
See you Sunday as we continue our series The Armor of God (The Belt of Truth).
I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
