“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."
-John 6:34-35-
“Do you want bread?”
This is perhaps the silliest question one can ask me at the dinner table. Go ahead and judge me, poke fun at me, scoff, mock and shame . . . I like bread. I do.
This past week, my wife and I were at a nice Italian restaurant. Our table was dimly lit with a candle flickering to the side. The table was made with white plates and silverware neatly rolled. The waitress came to the table and asked what we would like to drink. We placed our order and then she asked another question, “Would you like some bread?”
“UM YEA!” I thought loudly in my mind. Not very nice, I know, but I thought to myself what a silly question... well at least for me.
Jesus had just fed thousands of people. With full bellies and curious hearts, they follow Jesus to the other side of the lake. The Apostle John says they found Jesus and began asking questions. But Jesus tells them they are looking to Jesus because they just want to be fed- with earthly food. They want to be fed bread. Jesus tells them there is no amount of work they can do to earn God’s favor and his blessings. Jesus says, “It is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the true bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” The people loved what they heard and said to him, “Always give us this bread.”
Jesus declared. “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.”
Maybe today you are hungry. Your stomach growls for contentment in the mundane. Maybe you crave peace in the chaos of life’s many obligations. I have really good news for you today. Our Lord Jesus approaches you and asks,
“Do you want some bread?”
Join us Sunday as we celebrate God’s invitation for all people to come to Him to be full.
I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
