Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus,
“Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
“I tell you,” he replied,
“if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
-Luke 19:39-40-
What was it like when Jesus was coming towards Jerusalem on the back of a donkey? I bet it seemed as if the world, just for a moment, paused. They saw Jesus coming and they shouted “Hosanna!” (which means “Save us!”) I am sure they were honoring Jesus without fully understanding who He is, but don't be too harsh on them; Jesus' disciples didn't fully understand either. The Apostle John tells us, "His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him." (John 12:16).
Then there are the religious leaders of the day who told Jesus to shut them up, but Jesus refused and said he would be honored by the rocks if the people were silent, which only makes sense if you are indeed the Lord. The Apostle Paul stated, “For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” (Romans 8:19).
During the procession, the disciples probably said things like, "Wow, this is incredible, just look how many people are following him." A week later, when they saw the holes in Jesus' hand, they may have said what Thomas did, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Yes, the stones would cry out if the people couldn’t. Those people shouted greetings to Jesus and cried out for his help.
Sunday, in church we will too. We will pause, wave palm branches, and shout to our Lord Jesus “Hosanna!” (which means “Save us.”).
I can’t wait!

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19–21
