I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
-Psalm 16:8-
(Read 1 Samuel 17)
All eyes are on the young man. What in the world is he doing? Sent to deliver food like a Grubhub cyclist in Manhattan, David arrives with food sent for his family. He is just a shepherd boy with a chiseled chin. With anointing oil still dripping from his head. His brother mocks him, the army laughs at him, and the giant hates him. How dare he challenge Goliath the Philistine! The monstrous man shops at the big and tall store and his sandals are special order only. Goliath is a giant who is covered in a bronze helmet, and heavy armor and has a sharp spear. The boy has a giant problem.
You have giant problems too, don’t you? Problems that are covered in grief and despair. Problems that are armed with hate and greed. You stare at the giant problems and you are shaken!
But the young Shepherd focuses on the Lord...
“You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled.” (1 Samuel 17:45)
Goliath steps forward and the boy runs into the fray. David comes against the giant problem in the name of the Lord Almighty. The stone flies and the giant falls.
The young man’s name is David, yes King David, who keeps his eyes on the Lord even in the face of a giant. The next time you are facing a giant, remember to focus on the Lord, who has always focused on you even on the cross.
See you Sunday as we focus on the Lord in chapter 11 of The Story.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
