September 10th, 2025

I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.

- Ezekiel 34:15-16

Sunday, we begin a mini-series titled Lost & Found.  We will discover Jesus’ powerful message of his relentless pursuit of sinners like you, me, and even others who are not yet in church.

At the time of Ezekiel, God’s leaders, His shepherds, were not caring for His flock. Internally focused, God’s leaders were persecuting His flock, condemning His flock, and refusing to seek out those who had wandered and strayed. God’s leaders began to think that God was only for them, not for ‘those dirty sheep”.

In our Gospel reading this week in Luke chapter 15, the shepherds were once again not caring for God’s flock. They were not encouraging; they were grumbling that Jesus was “eating with sinners,” prompting Jesus to share three stories to illustrate a powerful point.  Jesus came to seek and save the lost.  God, in his mercy,  makes it clear HE will take care of his flock.

Our Lord Jesus makes it known that HE is the Good Shepherd and makes it abundantly clear that HE is in the Search and Rescue business, not the Search and Recover business.  He brings life, not death, and REJOICES when one sinner repents.

Martin Luther shares a wonderful proclamation in his meaning of the second article of the Apostle’s Creed.

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity.

It is a great reminder to all of us that repentance is not a one-time act, but a daily return, a continual state of being found by the Shepherd.  It is a life of repentance and forgiveness.

Sunday, we will come together as sinners, repent of our sins, and be reminded that apart from Christ we are lost and condemned.  There we will praise and worship our Lord as we celebrate our salvation and rejoice with the angels over every sinner who repents.

See you Sunday - I can’t wait!

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19–21
