Stand firm with . . . the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

- Ephesians 6:17b-18

This week we attack! Do we attack with our own thoughts, ideas, or feelings? No. We attack with the Sword of the Spirit!

Roman soldiers would carry a sword known as a gladius. The blade had sharpened sides and a deadly tip so sharp it could penetrate armor. The soldiers, or "swordsman" were known as gladiators, and never would a gladiator battle without their sword. We carry a sword too, and our sword is sharp!

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. -Hebrews 4:12

We are ready for battle! In this series we have fastened the Belt of Truth around our waist, kept the Breastplate of Righteousness in place, and stood firm together with Boots fitted perfectly with the readiness from the Gospel. We then took up our Shield of Faith and donned our Helmet of Salvation last week. This week we take up our gladius, the Word of God.

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 10:5

We do not need to fear, we are ready for Satan’s attacks. We have an enemy who tries to overthrow the truth of salvation - that Jesus died and rose for us. Satan tries to attack our identity in Jesus, our provision in Jesus, and our hope in Jesus. But he has no hope because we stand firm in the armor of God, and attack the enemy’s lies with His word. Fellow redeemed in Christ, be alert, stand firm, and pray for each other. You are fully protected.

GLADIATORS, you’re up!

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
