The problem was the dark.

Last Friday night, I was snoring the night away in a California hotel after taking my son to college. I slept well until I woke up to use the bathroom. It was still dark - REALLY dark. I sat on the edge of the bed, rose to my feet, and walked straight ahead right into a chair and then a table. I stumbled and fumbled and soon realized I was nowhere near the bathroom which was to the left, past the little table, past the sink, and through the doorway.

I walked straight from the bed in my sleepy slumber because our bathroom at home is straight ahead. I was just heading to what I thought was my destination- I was wrong. If the lights were on, I would have never gone the wrong direction and would have never collided with a chair and table. With light, I would have seen the obstacles, and better yet, I would have seen where I was supposed to go.

The problem is the dark.

So it is in our lives. We live in a sometimes dark world turned upside down with sin. Darkened by greed, selfishness, lust, envy, and anger we lose sight of the direction our Lord has given us. Blinded by arrogance we go in directions we think are best, but stumble and fumble in the dark. But Jesus does not leave us alone in the dark with stubbed toes, quite the contrary!

Jesus said “I am the light of the world.”

Jesus comes into the darkness as the light, and gives us light, showing us the way to go. The way to go is simple- it is Jesus himself. He exposes our sins, calls us to repentance, and forgives our sins. He promises to shed light on our self-absorbed sinful lives, and shine his spotlight of unending grace and sacrificial love given freely to us through him. Knowing we are loved and forgiven, we can now shine His light for all the world to see.

The solution is The Light.

See you Sunday- I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
