“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 

-John 15:5-

Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” He also said that apart from Him we can do nothing. This is highlighted time and time again in scripture.  In Psalm 80:8, God’s people, “the vine”, was transplanted from Egypt into Israel.  Read Jeremiah 2:21 where God said “I had planted you like a choice vine, of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?”  

Jesus drops a bombshell in John 15:5 when he says he himself is The Vine.  Apart from our Lord Jesus, we can’t do anything at all, which is not always easy to stomach.  We want to be the source of good works to feel good about ourselves.  Herein lies the problem.  We are inward-focused, instead of upward-focused.  But thanks be to God he came for us control freaks, and we are not apart from him, in fact, we are connected to him! Therefore we can love each other and love others.  Our source of all spiritual and emotional nutrients is Jesus himself.  This great I AM didn’t need to request a name; it IS His name, and I AM came to you today with his promise of eternal life.
