“When I act, who can reverse it?”
Isaiah 43:13

My uncle and I have both had the pleasure of riding shotgun in a McLaren in Arizona. When the driver pushed the accelerator, the needles flew off the desert cactus and my head flung into the fancy headrest. It was fast-really fast, and every year car designers strive to make them even faster.

The new McLaren Artura has no reverse gear. In order to save weight and allow for eight forward gears, McLaren taps into the supplemental electric motor to drive backward. The sport’s car has no reverse gear, but you can still go in reverse.

What God has done cannot be reversed. “It’s too late now!” “What’s done is done!” “No going back!”

This week in chapter 16 of The Story, we meet the prophet Isaiah. The book of Isaiah has been nicknamed “The Fifth Gospel.” Over 250 passages in the New Testament refer to Isaiah! Isaiah overflows with God’s promise that God will make a way for his people and lead them out of captivity. An ancient church father, Saint Jerome, introduced Isaiah by saying,
“He should be called an evangelist rather than a prophet, because he describes all the mysteries of Christ and the church so clearly that you would think he is composing a history of what has already happened, rather than prophesying about what is to come.”

Isaiah 43 is one of the most powerful proclamations of God’s redemptive plan in all of scripture. God says, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” It’s too late now! What’s done is done! No going back! No reverse.

God has done exactly as He promised in Jesus. He has redeemed YOU, called YOU by name, and made YOU the object of His love. Who can reverse it?

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
