Monday’s Olympic games featured the spectacular performance of the United States men’s gymnastic team. The men ran, jumped, swung, and flipped their way to a bronze medal. It was the first medal received by our men’s gymnastic squad since 2008, and the world rejoiced.
While I was watching our team, I noticed an unassuming young man sitting on the bench in his uniform. His eyes were shut behind his thick glasses, apparently lost in concentration. His name is Stephen Nedoroscik. His physique was different than the other men on the team. His teammates flaunted shoulders the size of softballs, his were hidden by his warm-up. His teammates congratulated each other one by one as each completed their routine on the pommel horse. But Stephen just sat and concentrated.
| |
As the camera focused on Stephen, the television announcer shared with viewers that he was a specialist - his only Olympic event was the pommel horse. Now, on the world’s grandest stage, it was Stephen’s turn to perform. He had prepared his entire life for this one event, and now he had to score high for his team to medal.
Stephen stood up from the bench, removed his glasses, and . . . crushed it! Stephen did so well that his team won the long-awaited medal. Stephen was lifted high into the sky by his teammates as a victorious hero.

USA Gymnastics posted on X "not all heroes wear capes" Stephen's girlfriend responded with three perfect words...
Our Lord Jesus didn’t wear sunglasses, and he didn’t wear a cape either. Jesus didn’t climb a pommel horse to perform, or ascend a podium to receive his prize. Jesus Christ climbed a cross where he died for us.
But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
-Hebrews 2:9-
Our Lord Jesus took on death for everyone and is now “crowned with glory and honor.” “Everyone” includes you and me. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus gives you the eternal victory, earned for by him for you.
See you Sunday as we celebrate The Hero - Jesus Christ - and his mission for us to tell others. I can’t wait!
Pastor Austin

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
