Missy, Karen, Lucy, and Ellen decorating the church for Christmas.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,
that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed.
- 1 Peter 2:24 -
It’s that time of year. Christmas trees are being cut down, and decorations are going up. We even sing songs about trees . . .
🎶 O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
How lovely are thy branches!”🎶
That is the first line of the famous song “O Christmas Tree,” sung around the world this time of year. But most people don’t know the second verse…
🎶 O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree,
How rich God made thee grow! 🎶
It’s so true, God makes trees grow beautifully. Shapes so unique, there are no trees the same in dimension. Green pine needles so colorful they cannot be replicated on a painter's palette. “Lovely” branches hanging at the ideal angle, inviting delicate ribbons and fragile glass ornaments. Trees perfectly designed by God to grow - so are we. We are made in God’s perfect image (Gen. 1:26-27). But since the fall, we are all sinful and need help - we need to be saved.
So God did something. He grew a tree. A tree that would one day be cut down, but not to be used as a decoration; it would be cut into pieces to be used as a cross. This is the cross on which God’s Son would die for you and for me—taking all of our sins upon himself so that we might be, well, lovely.
As you hang your ornaments this year, remember Jesus who came to die on a tree for you. See you Sunday, as we continue our Advent series “God of the Impossible.”
