(The Road to Emmaus, an 1887 painting by Robert Mund)
(Read Luke 24:13-35)
“It is true! The Lord has risen…”
Saint Luke tells us two of Jesus’s followers were walking, talking and sulking. The faithful men had placed all their hope in Jesus, rightfully so! But now their hope was gone. Jesus asks “what things” they are talking about, and they give a blunt answer.
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. -Luke 24:19-21
The men were heartbroken; their hopes were dashed in the crucifixion of their Lord. But it is also obvious the men had heard Jesus promise that he would rise from the dead, and today is the third day. They left too early- it is STILL the third day.
In life, we go through difficult times. It is in these times of trial that Satan reaches into his toolbox and pulls out distraction, anxiety, worry, fear, and hopelessness. We quickly forget our lives are still under God’s control. But, even in our doubts, Jesus comes to where we are and walks with us through the darkest valleys. In our doubts, Jesus doesn’t shame us, instead, he comes in mercy and reveals himself to us in his Word, and his body and his blood in his supper.
Jesus himself comes well qualified to comfort us on our sorrowful Emmaus roads. Jesus comes bearing a resurrection resume of perfection, sacrificial love, and death-defeating power. Jesus reveals himself to you today in resurrection glory.
Amen!
See you Sunday as we hear the rest of the story - I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7
