“Secrets of Charm”
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Proverbs 3:5
“The Secrets of Charm” was the title of a 1954 book, written by Mary Sue Miller and John Robert Powers. The book is dedicated to making the dull shiny, the boring exciting, and the slouched over straightened up. In over three hundred pages, the authors detail what it takes to be charming. Some suggestions include when and where to wear gloves, based on the social situations; what shoes to wear to make feet appear smaller; how to have the proper posture. The authors even discuss avoiding particular facial expressions that may cause wrinkles. All of the ‘secrets’ are shared in the interest of you being (you guessed it) charming. Nearly 70 years later, the book’s suggestions are comical as different eras promote different behaviors. All these years later something hasn’t changed - everyone wants to be charming.
This week, we continue The Story in chapter 13. Solomon, David’s son, has been given the task of building the Lord’s temple. Everywhere Solomon goes, heads turn, and whispers could be heard. Solomon is super smart, the best builder in town, and heroically handsome. Solomon is charming.
The Lord told King David, that his son, Solomon would build the temple and supplied him with the materials to do so. Solomon did build the temple and dedicated it to the Lord. All was going so well until he turned his back on the Lord. Solomon began to trust himself and his desires more than his Lord. We do the same, we search the globe for advice, suggestions, and knowledge on how to live. We trust in ourselves more than the Lord. We look through the Dewey decimals before scripture.
The Lord makes it no secret how to live. He promises to guide you, protect you, and ultimately save you through The Temple, Jesus. Do you want to be charming? King Solomon has some advice to share. We will read in chapter 13, Solomon should have followed his own advice.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
