Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”

The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

- Joshua 5:13-16 -

The image is remarkable! There HE stands, mighty and strong, sword in hand. Who is this? This could be wonderful or horrifying. Wonderful if this guy is on your team. Horrifying if he is not. Joshua wastes no time and asks which side this fighter is on. The response? “Neither.” This fighter is completely different. “...but as the commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”

Joshua needs no explanation, he just falls on his face and asks what message this commander has for him. The commander says, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”

Joshua took off his sandals. (Ya think?!)

This commander is the same One who told Moses in the burning bush to remove his sandals, yes, this is preincarnate Christ standing in power and might. This is not just an angel, no angel would ever allow that (see Revelation 19:10 or 22:9). This is The Lord! Remarkably, even the conquest of Canaan was the work of Christ. The Battle Begins with the Lord leading the way!

Jesus went to battle for us too. He took sin, death, and Satan head-on and proclaimed victory in hell. Jesus led the charge into the fray for me, for you, for the whole world.

It’s time to worship the Commander who alone is holy.

Join us Sunday as we see The Lord leading his people into battle in The Story chapter 7.
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
