Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

-Genesis 22:13-

The Lord will Provide

(Read Genesis 22:1-19)

Our Old Testament reading is truly one of the great edge-of-your-seat moments in all of Scripture. Abraham has been showing God how he is willing to serve him, but now God is going to show Abraham there is something only the Lord himself will provide.

Abraham believed it, in fact, he told his son, Isaac just that. Isaac was familiar with sacrifices. Throw an animal on a burning altar and you have a sacrifice -everyone knew that. So Abraham gave the strong young boy the wood to carry for the burnt offering. But as the father-son pair began ascending the mountain, the light bulb in Isaac’s head flashed terror. His father, Abraham had the fire stick -no Zippo lighters back then. His father had a knife-you need one to slaughter the animal. But … there was no animal! Isaac began asking questions...

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

-Genesis 22:6-8

This Sunday, we will climb the mountain with Abraham where he witnessed God’s incredible provision. Abraham’s message to his son was affirmed when God did in fact provide that sacrifice so that Isaac would not die. The promised Messiah became THE sacrifice provided for us in Jesus so we would not die either.

God provided a sacrifice so remarkably great that Abraham named the place “The Lord will Provide.” I really like that name, don’t you?

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
