April 24th, 2024

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

- 1 John 4:11

Love. Love. Love.

We hear lots about love these days.  The world is filled with many ideas of what love looks like or should look like. Remarkably, though, the world does not give a real answer to why we should love.  Perhaps answers are given like “Well it’s just the right thing to do.”  Another might answer, “Love as you would want to be loved.”  Sure, both of these responses are fine, but both are missing the “why.”

Thankfully, the apostle John provides the answer…

We love because he first loved us. - 1 John 4:19

John gives the why!  We should love, love, love, because our loving God loved us so much he gave his only Son Jesus Christ as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  We didn’t deserve his love, but he gave it to us anyway. Jesus said “God so loved the world …….” (you know the rest).

So why should you love the in-laws?  Why should you love your enemies on the school board?  Why should you love the coworker who betrayed you?  Why should you love the one-time friend who now ignores you?  Why should you love the grumpy neighbor? Why should you love your ex-husband?  John gives us the “why.” Because God so loves you first- that’s why.  What a joy it is to have a reason to love- his name is Jesus.

See you Sunday, I can’t wait!

Love,

Pastor Austin

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
