1 Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
3 If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
5 I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
7 Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
8 He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.
-Psalm 130
Waiting . . .
If I am honest, I hate waiting… don’t you?
We live in a world that wants instant and immediate access to everything-information, entertainment, and even food. I know I get impatient when I have to wait for anything too. I don’t like to wait for my computer to load a page, I don’t like to wait for the car to pass on the highway, and I don’t want to wait until Sunday to be with all of you!
Waiting is hard, isn’t it? Especially when we wait for something good. It is no surprise that we get frustrated as we anxiously await our Lord’s return. We get frustrated with other’s behaviors saying things like, “How can they do that?” We get frustrated with pervasive evil in our world saying “The world has gone to hell in a handbasket.” We get frustrated with our sin too. “Why Lord do I sin, when you give me everything?”
Enter Psalm 130, it is the sixth of seven “penitential psalms,” and my personal favorite of the seven. The Psalmist cries out for mercy, declares that his sins are so bad that if the Lord took a record of sins no one would not be able to stand- they would be dead. But, the Psalmist confirms the Lord’s mercy, love and the incredible forgiveness he has been given. He also declares the reason for his forgiveness - to serve the Lord. So it is with us! So today, confess your sins to the Lord, receive his forgiveness, stop sinning, and go serve him with joy!
While we wait, let us gather together on Sunday as His church, where we will ponder the Psalmist's encouragement and assurance of waiting on the Lord while placing our hope in his word.
See you Sunday, it will be worth the wait!
