A Note from our Rector...

Earlier in November, Dwayne and I saw an albino deer. One of our game cams had caught it on camera (below) so we knew it was hanging around. However, when we saw it in person we screamed like little kids at Christmas after Santa has visited. It was magical. Seeing that white deer was such a simple joy...a gift from nature that was so special and so unique. Nothing could have made me happier in that moment.

Our white deer reminded me that real joy can't be bought. It comes from God's good gifts of creation and from our love of one another. To receive that joy, we only have to take time to look around and allow the wonder of creation to surround us.

It's easy to get caught up in the rush and expectations of the season but I encourage you to slow down this year. Take time to be in nature, to be with friends and family, to give back to others. Find joy in simple things. Maybe you won't see a white deer, but you will see what you need. May you find joy and wonder all around.

Be Light. Have Life. Share Joy.

Advent is a season of deep wonder as we anticipate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We anticipate God’s love coming to live among us in a gift so radical that it changed the world. And…it continues to change us every day. This Advent season, consider the ways in which the gift of Jesus Christ has brought light, life and joy into your world.

For our 2019 Advent Luncheon Series, you are invited to write a reflection(s) on the wonder of the season. We will then use those reflections to guide our time together each week. Of course, you are not required to write a reflection in order to participate in the Advent Luncheon Series. You may simply come and enjoy communion, lunch, and conversation!

However, if you would like to offer a written reflection, please choose one or more of the topics below. These topics are meant to be broad so that you may think creatively about each. Take time to pray and consider each verse and question. Write from your heart. Your reflection does not need to be long. 1-2 paragraphs are sufficient. We will also share these with the church as a whole through a weekly email so short, impactful reflections are best.

Week #1: Wonder in Light

Week #2: Wonder in Life

Week #3: Wonder in Joy
“I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy
may be complete.” – John 15:11

Our choir has been working hard to create a beautiful service of Lessons and Carols this Advent season. The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first celebrated at King's College, Cambridge on Christmas Eve, 1918. It has become a favorite tradition in many congregations and we are looking forward to sharing this tradition with Grace Church and the Goochland community.

Please join us and bring a friend. A reception of Holiday Cookies & Hot Chocolate will follow in the Parish Hall. Please bring your favorite holiday cookies to share.

Once again, we will be supporting a family thru the Goochland Christmas Mother program. A sign up sheet with gift ideas and specifics about the family will be posted in the Parish Hall the first week of December. Donations will also be accepted for those who prefer not to shop. Please make checks payable to Grace Church with Christmas Family noted in the memo line.

Please join us on Saturday, November 30th at 10 am to prepare the space for the Advent Season including set up for the Advent Potluck Breakfast. Next mark your calendars to help green the worship space for Christmas Eve on Saturday, December 21st from 10:00 am to Noon. We will also be making Christmas cookies and ornaments so we are hoping that all the youth will join us!
