This Week in the North Room:
Human Rights and Refugees and Ukraine

As a part of our consciousness-raising and information gathering about what is happening to our sisters and brothers in Ukraine and other war-torn regions, William G. O'Neill will lead a conversation in the North Room this Sunday, May 15th after the 11 am service.  William is an expert in international law specializing in humanitarian, human rights, and refugee law. He was Senior Advisor on Human Rights in the UN Mission in Kosovo, Chief of the UN Human Rights Field Operation in Rwanda, and led the Legal Department of the UN/OAS Mission in Haiti. He has testified before both US houses of Congress on human rights, refugees, and humanitarian emergencies.

This event will also be streamed on Zoom for those who cannot attend in person. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7186241850

Purchase a delicious baked item for our Ukraine fund-raising effort and join us in the North Room for this provocative conversation.
Please Help to Aid Families in Ukraine

The crisis for families in war-torn Ukraine has touched us all as Christians and Americans. Over the past two weeks a committee has gathered to discuss ways in which Grace Church can help support our Eastern European brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Events are being planned to increase our awareness of the needs of Ukrainian families under attack in their homeland or those who have been forced to flee. By expanding our knowledge of the crisis and learning more about Ukrainian history and culture, we can find ways to help these families in need.

We kicked off events on Mother’s Day by giving out our annual Mother’s Day flowers in blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag and by offering a selection of Ukrainian baked goods at coffee hour. Over the arc of time between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day , we will continue the cultural and fund raising efforts with guest speakers, Ukrainian musical offerings, bake sales, and activities for children. We plan to expand our annual BBQ on June 19th with a “Taste of Ukraine," showcasing delicacies and sweet treats from their homeland.
All fundraising will be targeted for Ukrainian charities, primarily Episcopal Relief and Development’s Ukrainian efforts.

We hope you will join us and give generously to help our brothers and sisters in need.
Bake Sale

Thank you to Linda Wexelblatt for the wonderful Ukrainian pastries she provided at all the Coffee Hours last Sunday to help kickoff our Aid to Ukraine Campaign.

Reminder : Bake Sales will take place this Sunday at the 8 am and 11 am Coffee Hours.
Bakers are needed to support this effort. If you have a favorite baked good, please share it with us. Proceeds will go to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters.

Thank you!

Get Ready Grace Church:
Springtime is Farming Time!!

Grace Church is returning to Red Hook Farms on our designated second Saturday of the month, May 14th, 10 am – 1 pm, and we need you! This second Saturday commitment will continue throughout the farming season, which ends in November.

Our relationship with Red Hook Farms aligns perfectly with Grace’s Core Values! By contributing your time and talent, you serve with compassion in an underserved community.  Further, by supporting a sustainable urban agricultural enterprise that financially benefits the local community, you are working for social justice to address food insecurity by improving access to healthy and affordable food.

Farm volunteers must be 14 years or older; those younger must be accompanied by a parent. All volunteers must complete the COVID-19 screener form before arriving at the farm. If you want to sign up for the May 14th date, please e-mail Cara Dorr at caradorr@gmail.com no later than Monday, May 9th.

If you cannot come out to the farm, but want to support urban agriculture and youth empowerment, consider signing up for the Red Hook Farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).  You will receive seasonal and fresh weekly produce, grown right here at the Red Hook Farms, at affordable prices! For more information about CSA, click here and  to register. Thank you for your support!
Grace Church Moms Small Group

Hoping to connect with other moms at Grace? We are re-envisioning our seasonal Parents Book Club as a Moms small group, where we will focus on getting to know one another and discussing bite-size content [podcasts/articles/book chapters] to make it simple and stress-free to join the conversation!

Our kick-off gathering will be on Wednesday, May 25 from 8 until 9 PM via Zoom, where we will discuss the broader vision for the group and shape our future meetings/discussion topics together. We will also make time to discuss a podcast episode from author Kate Bowler on Tolerating Imperfection (you can read or listen from here). If you're interested in joining the group, please contact smyates@gmail.com to join the email list

EFM Fall 2022 Openings

The Education for Ministry (EFM) Seminar program at Grace Church welcomes inquiries from those interested in joining the Fall 2022 program.

This 4 year course of study provides a framework for individuals to connect faith to their daily lives through reading and discussion. Meeting once a week in a group of up to 12, and led by mentors trained to facilitate the experience, you will begin to think theologically, reflect faithfully, and speak civilly when confronted by beliefs and principles in opposition to your own. You will learn how to articulate your faith and shape your faith into action.

The Grace program meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30-9 PM September to June with breaks at holidays. Previous students who didn't complete all 4 years are welcome to return. Both Grace members and those from other parishes are invited to participate. Registration closes July 30th.

For more information:

Contact Co-mentor Kim Lovejoy, kim.lovejoy@gmail.com, 646-335-5080, or speak to an EFM participant in your parish.
Dodge YMCA's 17th Anniversary Party and Fundraiser: Tickets on Sale Now!
Tickets are now available here for the Dodge YMCA's 17th Anniversary Party and Fundraiser on Thursday, May 19th at 6PM at the Green Building on Union Street!! Please join Dodge Y Board Members Steve Dietz, Barbara Lowe, Amy Rowland, and the Rev. Dr. Allen Robinson at this fun and festive event in support of a very important Brooklyn institution.
Despite losing half of its income over the past couple of years due to the pandemic, the Dodge Y has continued to support neighborhood families with after-school, camp and teen programs. The timing of this party is especially important: with the school year ending soon, many NYC kids will need a safe place to go while their caregivers work. The Dodge Y runs wonderful day camps for kids, and we are hoping to raise enough money to help make camp accessible to every kid who needs a spot.
To purchase tickets or make a donation to support the Dodge YMCA, please click HERE. It would be wonderful to have many Grace parishioners in attendance!!! Please reach out to Amy Rowland with any questions at amyerowland@gmail.com

Parish Prayer Concerns & Thanksgivings

In thanksgiving for all who worked so hard on the Gala evening celebration of Grace Church’s 175th Anniversary. That we, strengthened by the Risen Christ, may be firm in our faith, bear witness to his commandment of love, and offer welcome to all people. For all whose work points to a new heaven and new earth, especially those who fight poverty, homelessness, hunger, and unequal justice. In thanksgiving for our God, who comes down from heaven and makes his home among us, making all things new; by his grace, may we live in hope and endure suffering without falling prey to corruption. That God will protect those who are experiencing persecution and hardship, and help them to love in the face of fear and hate. That God will bless our President, our Governor and our Mayor with vision, courage and compassion for all whom they govern. For peace and justice for the people of Ukraine, Russia, and all who are caught up in wars. For relief for all who suffer from catastrophic flooding, or from drought and wildfires, and for blessing for those who are good stewards of earth and its inhabitants. For all who struggle to afford food and shelter, and for those who are homeless.  For those whose lives have been affected by gun violence this week. For those who have been commended to our prayers, especially Sarah Jane; Joyce; Shaily & family; Nadal; Judith; Linda; Scott; Vivian H.; Lenore; Karl S.; Janice; Mike; Marcelle; Joe D. & family; Bill; Heleen; Sonia; Anita; Linda C.; Tom; Noreen K.; Cary; Aria & Ruah; Gwen & Marybeth; Stephanie; and all who suffer from COVID.   For all who have died, especially Ron Godfrey, cousin of John Colón, and all who have lost their lives in war. For all who mourn.
