Lenten Meals are Coming Soon!

Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent are drawing near! Just five short weeks from now, we will enter into this time of contemplation and preparation for Easter. Lent has historically been a period of fasting and mindfulness. Where Christian’s have re-oriented their priorities to focus on prayer, fasting, and worship. Especially in the early church, Lent was the time when the those seeking baptism would prepare to receive that gift on the Vigil of Easter. This same understanding shaped much of the eating habits of early Christians, who going into Lent would give up the “rich” foods of eggs, milk, cheese, and meats (basically the mid-western diet!) and replace them with simpler things like vegetables, fish, beans, and bread. We often think of Fish Fry’s, but the classic Lenten diet is much wider than that! In recognition of that, this year we are hoping to look back to this simplicity with some of our own Lenten meals. Drawing from the spirit of Lent not with a strict code of rules, but with hearts drawn to the meaning of simplicity found in this season.

This also helps in another way. One of the goals of these meals is that the sponsoring groups can fundraise for their own ministry needs or towards the need of a ministry partner. Sadly, in the last few years sometimes the cost of the meal itself isn’t covered by the donations received. While getting to gather around a table with one another is always a joy, we also hope that a simpler menu and a suggested donation of $5 for adults would help to make these meals an opportunity to support these ministries we care for in a more sustainable way. If you or your ministry team are interested in helping to serve one of our Lenten Meals you can sign up using the link below.
