Book Review (continued)
Bishop Curry sums up the book this way: There is power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. There’s power in love to show us the way to live. I’m talking about power, real power – power to change the world.
Brief comments of introduction to Bishop Curry’s other books – Crazy Christians: a Call to Follow Jesus ; Songs My Grandma Sang ; Following the Way of Jesus: the Church’s teaching for a Changing World, v. 6 , by Michael Curry and others – will also be included.
Coffee will be available in the 3 rd floor kitchen; no doughnuts will be available, so come fed or with the means to feed yourselves!
Office Closure
Grace Offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, in observation of the Labor Day holiday. Business as usual resumes on Tuesday!
Grace Youth Meeting
Our second youth group meeting of the semester will occur on Tuesday, September 3 rd from 6pm to 8pm in the youth space in the 4th floor of our office building (the building just to the north of our main worship space). Dinner will be provided! For the rest of the fall semester, we'll meet from 6pm to 8pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. Got a question? Contact the Rev. David Burman at 423-521-2783 or at
David Burman Ordination
Next Wednesday, the 4 th of September brings the ordination of our curate, David Burman, to the sacred order of priests. The service is at Grace at 7 p.m. All are invited to celebrate with David and greet the Bishop at a reception in the Undercroft following the service.

If you'd like to donate towards an ordination gift for David or to his discretionary fund, there's still time! If you would like to contribute to David's gift, please visit “Give” on our website at and select “David’s Ordination Gift” from the drop down. Checks may be made out to Grace with "Ordination Gift" in the memo line. In addition, the offering at David's ordination service will go to support David's discretionary fund, which is used to provide assistance to our neighbors in need.
Peer Ministry Retreat for Youth
On the weekend of September 13-15, there will be a retreat for youth from all Chattanooga area Episcopal churches at Grace Point. This will be a peer ministry retreat, so there will be activities designed to help youth support one another and minister to each other -- and there will also be time to relax and eat good food! Retreat Costs $100, but Grace Church can provide scholarships upon request! Also, for transportation help to the retreat, talk to David Burman our curate: . Here's a link to registration:
Outreach Meeting
The Outreach Committee will meet on Tuesday evening September 10 in the Barth Room at 5:30. This is an important meeting as we will be reviewing last year and planning activities for this coming year and begin talking about the budget for next year. If you are interested in outreach please request to be put on the mailing list by emailing me at .
Supper Clubs
Grace Supper Clubs will be starting up in September. These are an excellent way for new and you to get to know some of the other members of Grace in a casual dinner setting. If you are interested in joining a group, Dave Stanislawski will be available after both services on Sunday with a sign-up sheet or you can contact him at .
Interested in Becoming a Chorister?
The Grace Church Choir has resumed rehearsals for the new academic year. If you have an interest in joining the choir you are encouraged to contact music director David Long at or by phone, 423-645–2103. The Grace Choir serves as our parish choir for our Sunday morning liturgy from Rally day through Pentecost/Trinity Sunday. We also sing other services such as evensong, Christmas Eve and Holy Week services.
Food Pantry Needs
Grace’s Food Pantry always bring to mind the old joke about whether the car’s turn signal was working. The driver turned on her signal and sent her companion to the rear of the car to see, and the observer duly reported, “Yep, nope, yep, nope, yep, nope.” The pantry is following a similar pattern: it’s full! It’s empty! full again! empty! At the moment, it’s both, bursting at the seams in some areas (for which we are VERY grateful!) and quite scanty in others (we’ve had a lot of traffic from homeless people this week, and a few visitors with large families). See below for the scanty areas, and if you’re at the grocery, pick up a few – or a lot! – of items to fill in the thin places. As ever, thanks from Grace’s staff and volunteers for providing us with the means to help our neighbors. These neighbors are extremely grateful as well!
·       Canned corn, carrots, peas, pinto beans
·       Pop tarts and granola bars
·       Hearty soups
·       Beef stew
·       Canned hams
·       Canned tuna
·       Peanut butter (jars)
·       Saltine crackers
·       Chili
Thanks to Grace Parishioners…
From Barger Academy -- Dear Grace Episcopal Congregation,
Thank you so very much for your continued support of our school! Your supplies and especially your clothing donations help out our families so much. The weekend after Ms Hurt dropped off all the clothes, one of our families suffered a devastating house fire. The mother has six kids, four of whom attend Barger. We had enough from you to help all four of our students!
Thank you –

From Susan LaGraff for Rally Day Help -- My sincere and heartfelt thank you to all who participated in a quite successful RALLY DAY. In spite of the weather and no bouncing in the houses (Hopefully they'll give us a Rain Check!) I think everyone enjoyed the day. I hope you got to meet someone new and talked to the person you've been sitting near. Without naming names thank you for wonderful help setting up and clean up. Paper plates and plastic makes more garbage but, once in a while we can get away with it don't you think?? Delicious dishes, good conversation always makes a good party.
