Friday Devotional:
Psalm 99
When I am preaching, it has been important to me, within careful boundaries, to share my own brokenness and sin. Sometimes after my sharing, people will let me know they appreciate my honesty. But sometimes they will express surprise that a pastor would say or do such a questionable thing. Although pastors have a call to lead God's people, they cannot escape their human frailty.
The psalmist names some of the great heroes of the faith: Moses, Aaron, and Samuel. These people cried out to God, and God answered them. They followed God's call and did great things among god's people. But they weren't perfect. Yet here, with all their faults and failings, they continue to be heroes of the faith. For along with the holiness of god, they help make real for us the love of God.
Like faith heroes, we live out our faith with mixed results. And like them, we are heard, forgiven, and held accountable by God to change our ways and grow in our faith.
O God, forgive me and send me out with compassion to your broken world. Amen.
