Friday Devotional:
Psalm 17:1-9
In our congregation we are intentionally seeking to become more aware of the history and current realities of the Indigenous people who earlier lived on the land where we dwell. We confess that as a nation we have often treated First Nations people unjustly. With the psalmist, I cry, "Wondrously show your steadfast love" (v.7) that we might see each other as kinfolk in God's kingdom.
Recently children in our Sunday school made a simple craft, a God's eye. woven with yarn and sticks, it is credited to both Latino and Native American cultures. The pupil, the "apple" in Old English, of the multicolored God's eye is always black. All of us have a black pupil, and we are the "apple of [God's] eye" (v.8). God's eye sees each of us as special.
As one who has age-related macular degeneration, I am grateful for advances in treating this disease. God's vision is not impaired, though. God continues to see us and all creation as God's beloved.
God of all vision, let our eyes be fixed on justice and loving-kindness. Amen.
