Friday Devotional:

Psalm 70

Five times over, the writer of this psalm uses the word "let," imploring God to act. One may call Psalm 70 a prayer of bold imperatives as the psalmist pleads for God's action. The psalmist will know that God has acted when their enemies are "put to shame" (v.2) and deliverance is given to all who seek God and God's ways. There is a hint of desperation in the tone of this prayer, asking God for help and deliverance-posthaste!

Like the psalmist, we often pray to God with a sense of urgency, beset by our current circumstances in need of God's attention. The "lets" are placed on our own lips and lifted to God as we plead for salvation to come without delay.

With that said, our rejoicing and gladness in God do not depend on the immediacy of God's action; rather, our joy is wedded to the faithfulness of God to God's promises. God's greatness does not depend on our perception of activity but on God's gift of eternal salvation for us and all the world.

God of our salvation, let it be with me according to your word. Amen.

✝ We continue to pray for all those in Israel and Gaza who are suffering from the war. We also pray for the people everywhere who have no place to go to escape the violence that envelops their homes. We continue to pray for peace in our world and care for all those who are suffering from natural disasters.

✝ Those who struggle with health; housing; or relationships.
