Friday Devotional:
Psalm 30
Have you heard of the "spotlight effect"? It is the belief that others are paying more attention to us than they really are.
I once participated in a sustainability clothing experiment. I wore the same wool dress for one hundred days. I could wash the dress as needed and be creative with daily styling. I told my spouse about the experiment, but no one else, not even people I saw multiple times a week, noticed.
However, I noticed changes in myself. Simplifying my attire reduced decision fatigue and freed up mental energy for other activities, including prayer time. Wearing natural fibers helped regulate my temperature, and it felt good to care for my God-given body this way. I felt more connected to God's creation by purchasing a renewable resource and reducing laundry water consumption. I felt clothed in joy.
In the days since I have continued to steward God's gifts to me and still feel clothed in joy.
Gentle Spirit, reduce our fear and increase our joy in you, our world, and one another. Amen.
