Friday Devotional:
Psalm 46
Psalm 46 was the inspiration for Martin Luther's great hymn " A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," which many Lutherans love to sing on Reformation Sunday with full organ and brass or guitars and drums. The psalmist proclaims God's mighty, sustaining presence in Jerusalem, and we know it is with us today. In verse 10, God's voice breaks through as if to announce, "Listen up! I am your refuge and strength in times of trouble."
Have you ever lost your voice? Not being able to talk can be very isolating. My husband has Parkinson's disease, and one of his symptoms is a softer voice. For a retired pastor whose profession involved preaching, teaching, and visiting with members, it is humbling to not be heard. Often, he is relegated to being still and listening. I remind him that most people love to talk, and good listeners are rare.
Listening to God's voice through daily devotions, prayer, and mutual conversation and consolation is a habit to nurture.
Help me be still, O Lord, and listen to you and to others. In Jesus' name. Amen.
