Friday Devotional:
Psalm 49:1-12
"To the leader. Of the Korahites." If the fine print is true, the wisdom in this psalm was offered to music leaders to bring to the people in song. We are reminded that all our economic striving will, in the end, be left behind. "You can't take it with you," no matter who you are, according to the psalm. Eventually the lights get turned off; we are lost in time.
Shall we then strive all the more to cement our place in history, to shore up our economic contrails, to-by force of will and effort-never die? Or, as the psalm suggests, might we open our hearts to death's inevitability, acknowledge that great equalizer, and seek to ground ourselves in something/someone whose love is beyond our temporal reality? Can we view ourselves and each other the eyes of One who sees us in our full, vulnerable mortality and loves us just the same? Today, center on Jesus, who will ransom you into all eternity fully conscious of your name and truth.
God of death and life, let your love center and guide us in all we do. In Jesus' name. Amen.
