Friday Devotional:
Psalm 23
"I'm going to catch you, you better run,' goes an upbeat children's song my daughter loves. This song celebrates different fun activities for every day of the week, all while announcing that more fun is always hot on our heels. If goodness and mercy in our beloved Psalm 23 had a theme song, I believe they would sing with gusto, "I'm gonna catch you! Here I come!"
I used to picture goodness and mercy "following" me like an adorable, well-trained dog. However, the Hebrew word translated "following" is more accurately translated "to chase" or "to pursue." Goodness and mercy are relentless and determined to catch up with us.
In our daily lives, we are too often pursued by over-booked schedules, exhaustion, past mistakes, and fears. The goodness and mercy of God are hot on our heels, through, and will pursue us without tiring, no matter how busy we are or how fast we run. God's love will always catch us and keep us safe, every day of the week.
Shepherding God, may your goodness and mercy catch us every day. Amen.
