Friday Devotional:
Psalm 97
If the psalmist's proclamation is accurate, those who rejoice in the Lord are a rare and lonely lot. Romans 3:10, no doubt quoting Psalm 14:1, reminds us that "there is no one who is righteous, not even one." Ouch.
But with Jesus there is healing and abundant redemption. In his explanation to the third article of the Apostles' Creed, Martin Luther reminds us that we do not achieve or merit righteous because of our own effort. It is the Spirit who creates faith in us as a free and unmerited gift. Those who rejoice in the Lord-every single one of us-are invited to join the song of praise because the Spirit of living Christ makes it possible. Un-ouch. God is good.
There may be "no one who is righteous, not even one" when we depend on our own reason or strength to make it so. But with wounded hands and side, Jesus invites us into the circle of those who praise God's name both night and day. And so we rejoice in the Lord.
How can we thank you, compassionate God? You alone can make things right, and so we rejoice. Amen.
