Friday Devotional:
Psalm 67
There is a progression in Psalm 67. It begins, "May God bless us." It continues, "God has blessed us."It concludes, "May God continue to bless us." Hope expressed. Hope realized. Hope anticipated.
One of the compelling images of the liturgy for Evening Prayer is that of an endless circle of hope. As the sun sets and evening lamps are lighted by those praying this office, we affirm that the sun is rising on others who are waking to offer God their praise and their gifts of service. Nineteenth-century hymnodist John Ellerton captures it this way: "The sun, here having set, is waking your children under western skies, and hour by hour, as day is breaking, fresh hymns of thankful praise arise" (ELW 569).
What a joy to picture the never-ending circle of praise offered by God's people, then blessings showered on all people. If only we will see it, such praise and blessing rolls across the earth like the sun. Or, better said, like the Son.
We praise you, O God. May fresh hymns of thankful praise arise as the Son encircles the earth. Amen.
