Friday Devotional:
Psalm 46
A 2020 study found a 70,830 percent increase from 2019 in the use of the phrase "unprecedented times" in corporate presentations, reflecting realities such as climate change, the COVID-19 shutdown and aftermath, growing political divisiveness, wars, terrorism, school shootings, inflation, and more. Even some personal agonies can be labeled unprecedented.
Psalm 46 gives us this rock-solid testimony: "God is...a very present help in trouble" (v.1). The psalmist points us to an unchanging basis for our faith: not the changeable world, but the God who made it. In all circumstances, no matter how terrible, the unchanging God is our "refuge"-both our protection and our deliverance. In the psalmist's day, a refuge could be a hideout, but usually it was a place where one could stand on firm footing to battle those attacking. To take refuge in God, then, means not to hide from life but to trust God, whose love and care for us are unending.
O Lord, be for me a solid place to stand when confronting unprecedented times. Amen.
