Friday Devotional:
Psalm 19
I once sat in a coffee shop waiting for a friend. I was glad for some space to listen to the whir of the coffee-bean grinder and the spin of the blender. The door opened, and in walked someone I'd never met. He came to my table and sat down. "I need someone to pray with me." "Sure," I said. He replied, "You can make sure the words I'm saying are going to get God's attention. You can straighten it out with God for me, right?" I smiled. In a matter of minutes, he spilled much of his story.
Sometimes, we think our intentions must be pure and our words masterful in order to get God's attention. Yes, what we say and do influences God. But God's attention isn't something to be conjured or won. It is a gift. God's love is a grace. And God's presence is an unconditional promise for us. This truth reverses how we understand God's relationship with us and the basis for our prayers. We have God's ear and God's love. What then shall we pray?
Open us. Speak to us and through us. Help us trust your promise to always draw near to us. Amen.
