Friday Devotional:
Psalm 121
I learned Psalm 121 from my grandmother. In her later years her health declined. She suffered a broken hip, lost her sight, and dealt with significantly compromised hearing. Sometime shortly after my grandfather died, she and I sat in her backyard. As a very young adult, I had no words to comfort her. But she did. She recited this psalm over and over, the way one might work a string of prayer beads. It gave her great comfort. Today this psalm always remind me of her and her faith through difficult days.
When I accepted a position as the director of an outdoor ministry site, the psalm took on even more meaning. The place is called Lutherhill because there's a steep hill from the dining area to the cabins and activity area. That hill rings out with the many stories people tell about their powerful experiences of spiritual renewal and encounters with the Lord of creation.
It's good to memorize a few psalms to carry us through tough times
Sheltering God, thank you for coming to my rescue over and over again. Amen.
