Grace Notes

Friday Devotional:

Psalm 15

Irena Sendler saved an estimated 2,500 Jewish children during World War II. Working for social welfare in Warsaw, she smuggled them to safety in baskets, coffins, potato sacks, and ambulances with false bottoms, keeping meticulous family records hidden in buried jars. When tortured by the Gestapo, she refused to relinquish information. Rescued from execution by a bribe and smuggled to safety herself, she returned to her work under a different name.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. As people of the cross, we do not turn away from horror, but see hidden within it courage, hope, and Christ suffering with those who suffer. In the bleakest circumstances, in the iron clutch of evil, we aim to follow the example of Jesus in righteousness and truth. We lean on the Holy Spirit sr mat stand by our oath to love our neighbor, even to our hurt (v.4). Sendler was one of many stalwarts who saved endangered Jews, incarnating the love of another Jew, named Jesus. Unmoved by evil, he loves us to the end.

Receive our sighs too deep for words, O Lord, in your even deeper love. Amen.
