Grace Notes

Friday Devotional:

Psalm 23

The writer of this psalm understood what was required of a good shepherd. How often would such a person nudge the flock in the right direction with a rod? The staff allowed the shepherd to reach a wayward sheep, pulling it gently, restoring its footing on the right path. The psalmist saw God's care in much the same way.

Originally, I misunderstood how a rod and staff could comfort. For years, I feared an authoritarian baton held by God and the crook of a vaudeville-style cane pulling me from my own life's performance. But then, people like this psalmist, whose relationships with God were personal, helped me understand the extraordinary efforts a shepherd makes to ensure safety, well-being, and community. The enthusiasm for Christ and the tenderness I heard in their voices and saw in their actions were contagious. I sensed how un-alone they were in life-not that everything was smooth sailing, but that they were confident the Lord walked with them.

I realized their Good Shepherd was mine too. Saved from myself, I was deeply comforted.

Gracious God, today and always, work through me to show others your love and care. Amen.
