Friday Devotional:
Psalm 111
Many Psalms are solo petitions to God for safety from enemies or relief from pain. In this one we hear praise and thanksgiving-from a voice joined to a congregational chorus.
Maybe you've sung in a chorus. I grew up singing in the church choir, the high school chorus, even a madrigal group. Practice was serious business. The director led each section-basses, tenors, altos, sopranos- its part. Then at the words "All together now," we would cautiously wade into harmony. Sometimes the conductor had to return to a bass part or practice with the altos on a difficult measure before we could make beautiful music. But the practice was worth the reward.
In retirement, I have joined a congregation blessed with voices that don't hold back during hymns. Hearing the voices together sometimes brings me to grateful tears. Are we not one voice, whether strong or weak-one song in Christ Jesus, our Lord, whose "praise endures forever" (v10)?
God of melody and praise, make us bold to add our voices, strong or weka, to your song of joy. Amen.
