Friday Devotional:
Psalm 112:1-10
Prophets were known for not mincing words. It didn't matter if you were the king or queen, a wealthy landowner, or one of the ordinary folks. If you were living contrary to God's law, the prophet would confront you, calling you to repent and change your ways to reflect God's law. A prophet wasn't someone you would normally invite for dinner, but they might show up uninvited.
The psalmist in Psalm 112 takes a different tack from the prophets, repeatedly offering promises for the righteous rather than pain for the wicked, with only verse 10 directed to the latter. To have abundant resources, to live with integrity, and to be merciful are great blessings. Twice, in verses 5 and 9, the psalmist pictures those who have been blessed in turn blessing others-giving to the poor, freely lending to those in need, attentive to the demands of justice in a world tilted toward the powerful. Living like this reflects the love of God in a needy world.
Faithful God, remind me that I have been blessed so that I might be a blessing. Amen.
