Friday Devotional:
Psalm 121
Though my wife and I lived most of our life together in Ohio, we spent a few years elsewhere. There were good family reasons to do so, but our new location didn't feel like home. When our family mission was completed, we returned to Ohio, and one reminder that we were home was the presence of forested hills, a common geographic feature of the southeast corner of the state. Spiritually speaking, of course, our faith is not dependent on topography. We were aware that God was with us as much in the flatlands as in the hills.
In Psalm 121, the psalmist acknowledges looking at the hills but follows that by asking, rhetorically, "From where will my help come?" It's as if he's saying his help is not from the hills. He then answers his own question and says his help is from the Lord, "who made heaven and earth" (v.2), including, naturally, the hills. In that way, the hills-and all creation-remind the psalmist of God's presence in the world.
Lord, whatever the topography of my life today, enable me to perceive your help. Through Jesus. Amen.
