Friday Devotional:
Psalm 80:1-7, 17-19
The psalmist praises a shepherd who leads Joseph and is "enthroned upon the cherubim" (v.1). Yet at the same time, the psalmist seems unsure, praying in anguish that the Holy One would save God's people. The psalmist is feeling abandoned and alone.
Have you ever felt that way? It isn't unusual at this time of year, when so many people's spirits are high and excitement and anticipation are in the air, for some folks to feel depressed and lonely. As other devotion writers note, some congregations hold Blue Christmas services, which attempt to speak to that pain and loneliness.
These past several years have been filled with violence, hateful rhetoric, starvation, natural disasters, and massive displacement of people all around the globe, seemingly at record levels. It's easy to wonder at times if God hears our cries, our prayers for deliverance and healing. Where are you, God? The answer is that God is found in each one of us as we become helpers.
Lord God of hosts, thank you for loving us through our doubt and fear. In Jesus' name. Amen.
