Friday Devotional:
Psalm 31:9-16
Martin Luther King Jr. was born into an impossible situation. As a Black child growing up in a racist environment, he learned to expect the worst from enemies. He regularly saw his friends and neighbors brutalized.
The son of a Baptist minister, King trained for the Christian ministry himself. Through the words of the Old Testament prophets and in Jesus' call to radical discipleship, he felt -and answered- a call to lead a resistance movement against injustice.
King knew his life was in danger because he took risks for truth and what was right. In a famous 1968 speech he told his oppressed brothers and sisters, "Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will." Less than twenty-four hours later, he was assassinated by a white gunman.
Like King, we may feel surrounded by enemies at times. But God never abandoned him. And God never abandons any who love and serve faithfully. Thanks be to God!
Loving God, I am weary of seeing injustice done. Make me an instrument of your healing. Amen.
