Friday Devotional:
John 18:1-19:42
Five decades ago, I began writing stories, mostly about people I knew and loved. Other times, I wrote about people I never met but something about them touched me as they crossed my field of vision. I tried to capture moments of beauty and grace or some little thing that moved me. . . because I was afraid. My heart was haunted by a nagging doubt that maybe there is no God, no big Truth, no meaning- that we live, die, and pass into nothingness. I needed to claim moments where God and truth felt real.
So, I understand when Pilate asks Jesus, "What is truth?" I suspect he asked it with a sneer. But maybe he let the words linger in the air a moment, hoping there just might be an answer.
And Jesus? He just stood there, silent, for Truth allows no words. Truth is the infinite love of God flowing from Jesus' side as he bled and died. Truth is the Love who is the beginning and end of all that is and all we are, the Love who is our home.
Open my heart, Jesus, that I may know your love as the deepest truth of my life. Amen.
