Friday Devotional:
Psalm 93
Do you take in the daily news? If so, you're likely to hear or read stories about water-floods or droughts, too little clean water or too much tainted water. Water both gives and takes life.
The psalmist reminds us that water plays a complicated role in our sacred stories from creation's beginning. The flood in Noah's time spared some, but it destroyed others. With Moses, the Red Sea parted, saving the Israelites, and returned to its bed, killing Pharaoh's army. Later, lifesaving water flowed from rocks. Jesus turned water into wine and asked a Samaritan woman for a drink of well water. Above all, we receive the Holy Spirit in baptism's waters. God's compassion is awash in stories of water!
The Psalmist also reminds us that God's watery world will never be moved. God will remain sovereign. This gives us security. Thus, we can confidently serve amid floods, droughts, and everything in between. And we must surely share lifesaving cups of cold water.
Majestic God, we trust you during floods and droughts. Guide our service in your water world. Amen.
