Friday Devotional:
Psalm 148
As the book of Psalms concludes with its counsel to "praise the Lord," that command can seem like white noise. We see the word praise and move on. We've seen it before. God loves our praise, and we should offer it.
But Psalm 148 takes a different angle. Only three of its fourteen verses speak of people praising God. Most of the psalm speaks of the ways that creation itself mirrors the Almighty. Trees, hills, animals, and sea monsters constantly praise their creator. They praise God by simply doing what they were created to do. Fruit trees bear fruit. Sun and stars sparkle and shine. Animals creep, and birds fly.
What does God do? God takes a trumpet and blasts a song of God's own praise for -wait for it-us! "God has raised up a horn for God's people." Mirroring all that God has made, we praise God by being who God created us to be: caretakers of the earth and lovers of God and one another. Sparkle and shine! Bear fruit! Praise the Lord!
Praising God, let us be mirrors of your love in the world this day. We ask it in Jesus' name. Amen.
