Grace With Self Fosters Grace With Students

Recognize Steps Forward

Coaches, we had plans this summer. We were going to turn to tasks that had gotten sidelined over the busy spring semester. We were going to dig into longer-term planning for the fall, and designate space and time for reflecting and generating new ideas. Now it is the end of August, and institutions are either gearing up for the fall semester or have already begun. The question bubbles up in our minds – did we accomplish all of the summer goals we had set out?

Answers will vary, for sure. Maybe we did get to everything we planned to do, and maybe we did some of it, and maybe life got in the way and we didn't manage to do much of it at all.

This is an opportunity to start with grace, for yourself. Bring your coaching principles to bear as you focus on strengths and accomplishments of any size, reflect on what remains to be handled, and revise plans. Ask yourself questions such as:

  • What did I accomplish this summer related to my work goals?

  • How did I show up for my physical and mental health this summer?

  • How did I build on my strengths this summer?

  • Where can I shift my plans for fall to accommodate tasks I still want to address?

  • What goals or expectations might it serve me to revise or set aside?

  • How can I show up to the fall with energy and intent?

With grace for ourselves, we can set aside the energy drain of a deficit "here's what I didn't do" mindset, and approach a new semester with positive energy and a focus on our potential. As you coach yourself, you model this process for your students. These questions can work just as well for those whom you coach.  Being able to recognize the common threads we have with others, including our students, allows us to embrace the humanity that we all share and the frustrations we all have as humans. This common thread of humanity connects us all and lifts us up to go forward with the best that is in within each of us.
