Dear Grace Family,
This Sunday and next we find ourselves in the middle of one of the best known, and most loved, stories of the Old Testament. The story of David and Goliath has captured imaginations, inspired courage, given people extra strength for the battle, throughout the centuries. A young boy, an “accidental” participant in the events of the day, was thrust into the center of this story.
David heard the taunts of Goliath. He’s surprised no one has stepped up to challenge this Philistine. David began to speak up, “I’ll go and fight this bully, this enemy of God!” Some asked, “Who do you think you are?” “Who are you compared to all of the other fighting men in the King’s army?” No one, not even his oldest brother, believed he had a chance to survive, let alone prevail, against this champion of the Philistines. That didn’t slow David down. He kept talking. David’s courage and claims finally came to king Saul. Saul was desperate. He had to be, otherwise he would have shipped David home ... “go back to your sheep, leave the fighting to us.”
But David was determined. And so, Saul sent him. David believed God would fight for him. Out-manned, out-sized, out-weaponed, David took his sling, a few stones, and rushed forward.
That moment in David’s life gave him the confidence to face future difficulties in the days and years ahead. David believed God was with him, despite how things looked, despite the odds stacked against him, or the doubts of others. He trusted God … and he rushed forward.
In Christ,
