The collective grief we feel these days can feel unending. We particularly grieve for the children of this world and how they have to navigate violence and cruelty and danger that seem unrelenting.
There have been multiple shootings in Asheville/Buncombe County in the last several months that have taken the lives of children, taken the lives of children’s parents, and re-traumatized children, families, and multiple communities. The AC Reynolds community continues to process the deaths by suicide of two high school students in the past two weeks. And the school shooting in Nashville on Monday confronts us once again with such sorrow, grief, and many other feelings about the world that children are living in these days.
All of these tragic situations directly impact GCPC community members. Most recently, a GCPC family lost a beloved nine year old family member in the Nashville shooting. And GCPC community members are friends, family, teachers, and neighbors to others impacted by gun violence in the last several months in Asheville. GCPC youth attend AC Reynolds and were classmates of the two students who took their own lives. It makes sense to feel rage and grief around continued gun violence, the lack of mental health support, and the senseless deaths of children in places where they should be safe.
