Day of Pentecost

Readings and Psalm
Acts 2:1-21
Filled with the Spirit to tell God’s deeds
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. (Ps. 104:30)
Romans 8:14-17
The Spirit makes us children of God
John 14:8-17 [25-27]
The Father will give you another Advocate, the Spirit of truth
On Pentecost, we celebrate that we have been given an Advocate to accompany us. Poured out in wind and fire, water, wine, and bread, the Holy Spirit abides in and among us. We give thanks that God speaks to each of us, no matter our origins, language, or life path. Filled with the Spirit of truth, we go out from worship to proclaim the saving power of Christ’s love and the freedom of God’s grace with all the world.

Grace Book Club for June 2025
I Know Why the
Caged Bird Sings
by Maya Angelou
The next book for the Grace Book Club was chosen because it is a classic that some U.S. libraries have attempted to ban.
Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was an American writer and civil rights activist. She published autobiographies, essays, poetry, plays, movies, and television shows spanning 50+ years. She also received dozens of awards and numerous honorary degrees. Angelou's series of seven autobiographies focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of 17 and brought her international recognition. This book is available from various sources including public libraries.
Angelou was a respected spokesperson for Black people and women, and her writings are used in schools and universities worldwide. Her books center on themes such as racism, identity, family, and travel.
We will discuss the book on Tuesday evening, June 17, at 6 PM on the patio at the Herrstroms’ house (please contact the Grace office for the address if needed). Please bring your own sack supper. Beverages will be provided. We hope you will join us!

Adult Sunday School
On June 15, Julie Pryde, director of the Champaign Urbana Public Health District, will be our guest for Adult Sunday School.
She’ll talk about what we should know about public health in light of the current federal administration’s actions, and give some guidance on what individuals and communities might do to serve the common good in the important area of public life.
This is part of our ongoing focus on serving our neighbors in these contentious times.

Introducing Gather - Champaign Urbana*
(Young Adults)
The Gather Network is a ministry of ELCA Young Adults that seeks to "gather" young adults for community, fellowship, worship, and faith across cities or regions. With a lot of ELCA congregations in our area, Gather CU seeks to connect young adults with one another and help new young adults in the area get connected with a community and/or a congregation. For more background on Gather visit gathernetwork.org.
Join Gather Champaign-Urbana for our first unofficial meeting @ Rose Bowl Tavern in Urbana for Trivia Night on Wednesday June 18th @ 7:15pm. We'll get to know one another, enjoy a beer or soda, and have a friendly trivia competition. We'll also start some conversations about leadership and how often the group will meet, and decide on an *official name for the group. If you have any questions or are interested but unable to attend on the 18th please email Pr. Jon (pastor@lutherancampuscenter.org).

Prayer Requests
We have two formal ways of praying for one another at Grace. One is in the Sunday morning worship service, where we pray for people by name in the Prayers of Intercession. They will also be listed in the emailed and printed versions of GraceNotes, but not in the web version. Please send prayer requests for the Sunday-morning prayers to office@glccu.org. You may also submit prayer requests on our website at https://glccu.org/prayer-requests/.

Using GLC Facilities
Our facilities are available for use by members and by outside groups. If you would like to use any part of the facility, please fill out a Facilities Use Request, found on the web site, and contact Karen in the office to ensure that it is on the calendar, so that the space is ready for you and that you are aware of how to adjust the appropriate thermostat.

Pastor's Discretionary Fund
The Pastor's Discretionary Fund allows the church to offer financial assistance to people in our community. The office receives requests for help with rent, utilities, and other needs, and your donations make this important work possible! To donate to this fund, you can give online at https://glccu.org/donate/ or by mailing a check to the church office with "Pastor's Discretionary Fund" in the memo line.
