November 12, Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Fall Workdays

There is another Fall Workday (if the weather is dry) on November 11. Come if you can at 9:30 a.m. This will be outdoor work.

November 18 will be a rain date.

Thank You!

The Social Ministry Committee would like to thank all who so generously contributed to the clothing drive for the Decatur Correctional Center. A van load of clothing was delivered and the Center was most grateful for Grace's continued support. Generosity is a "rose" in this congregation.

Operation Turkey Sandwich

Volunteers on Thanksgiving morning assemble 200 sack lunches and deliver them to people who have to work the holiday, such as first responders, hospitals, convenience stores and hotels. It's a fun way to show thanks and lift up the ministries of others.

When: Thursday, Nov. 23, 9 a.m. sandwich making, 10 a.m. prayer and lunch assembly, 11 a.m. delivery teams.

Where: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2101 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign.

How to contribute: Please visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0A49AAAF2AA7F85-45643643-operation#/

Why: A fun, fellowship-filled way to start a holiday!

Lutheran Social Services of Illinois: Christmas Gifts

Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) is looking for help to provide Christmas gifts for children in their foster care program.

Sign-ups to sponsor a child began last week and will continue through November 19. The suggested donation is approximately $50 per child, and our initial target is to sponsor at least 50 children (out of ~400 currently in the foster care program). There are two ways that you can

help:

  1. Sign up to sponsor one or more specific children. You'll receive a copy of their wish list(s) and can go shopping yourself for their gifts. Please return the gifts (unwrapped or in a gift bag) to church on Sunday, November 19 or 26.
  2. Provide a monetary donation, and we'll do the shopping for you!

Simply send a check to the church with LSSI in the memo line or contact Brian or Amy Nicely for Paypal/Venmo options (217-714-4903; amy.nicely2@gmail.com).

Thank you for your generosity and help in making this Christmas special for the LSSI foster care children!

Advent Cantata

The ELCA churches of Champaign-Urbana will perform Britten's Rejoice in The Lamb and other choral works on Sunday, December 10, at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

If you have any questions or would like to help sponsor this community event, contact Nick Pierle at music@glccu.org.

Civic Life and Faith Sunday School

We continue our Civic Life and Faith study, using a curriculum developed by the ELCA. This study will help us consider the proper relationship of the religious and secular sides of our lives. You can preview the curriculum at https://www.elca.org/civicsandfaithstudy

This Sunday's topic is “What's Faith-based Living Got to Do With Civic Life?”

We will meet at 10:45 a.m. in the Hoffmeister Room.

Readings and Psalm

Amos 5:18-24: Let justice roll down like waters

Psalm 70: You are my helper and my deliverer; O Lord, do not tarry. (Ps. 70:5)

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18: The promise of the resurrection

Matthew 25:1-13: The story of the wise and foolish bridesmaids

Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ’s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory—the marriage feast of the lamb.

Prayer Requests

We have two formal ways of praying for one another at Grace. One is in the Sunday morning worship service, where we pray for people by name in the Prayers of Intercession. They will also be listed in the emailed and printed versions of GraceNotes, but not in the web version. Please send prayer requests for the Sunday-morning prayers to office@glccu.org. You may also submit prayer requests on our website at https://glccu.org/prayer-requests/.
