September 29, Michael and All Angels

Readings and Psalm

Daniel 10:10-14; 12:1-3

Psalm 103:1-5, 20-22

Revelation 12:7-12

Luke 10:17-20

The archangel Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the heavenly army, defeating the dragon (the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan). It is important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God’s victory ultimately comes by Jesus’ death and the testimony of his followers. The power of God’s truth gives us confidence in the face of evil on earth, even in the face of our own death.

Usher Request for Upcoming Sunday Services

Over the past few months, the group of people who hand out bulletins for the worship service has become a little smaller. Having ushers who do this adds a personal touch for those attending worship. If you would like to participate in this ministry, please contact Dave Larson or visit with him on Sunday morning.

Keep an Eye Out on October 1st for the

Monthly Grace Connections Newsletter!

On The Way

On The Way resumed this fall on Thursday evenings, beginning September 26, and is meeting for six sessions. (Note: We will not meet October 17.) On The Way is a faith-formation opportunity at Grace that connects new and potential members with established members of our faith community. If you’re reading this, you’re a candidate for participating in On The Way. Each 90-minute session is divided roughly into three parts – conversation on a topic of faith, spending time with a biblical text, and then in directed prayer. We’ll meet in the chapel, down the main hall just past the pastor’s office, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The fall sessions will focus the first 30 minutes on the questions our new people might have. But new people ask good questions that “old” people can also learn from, so y’all come!

Reminder for Everyone Who Signed-up for the FIFTH FEAST FELLOWSHIP this Sunday,

September 29th

We will be celebrating “Oktoberfest” with GLC friends on Sunday, September 29, at the “Horsch Radish” in Gibson City (click here to read more about the restaurant). Formerly the “Bayern Stube,” the restaurant continues the tradition of offering authentic German fare.

We will meet at the restaurant at 5:00pm. We will be seated in a separate party room, but the size of our group will determine seating arrangements. Everyone will be able to order directly from the menu, and no pre-determined gratuity will be added to our bills. (Please do plan to tip generously!)

See below for carpool information. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Champaign. The address is 209 North Sangamon Avenue, Gibson City. Be sure to check out their website.

WILLKOMMEN! Join us for a relaxing dinner together! Questions? Contact Claire or Kathy Bowersox.

For Parish Life,

Kathy Bowersox

Champaign/Urbana CROP Hunger Walk 2024

The CROP Hunger Walk will take place this year on Sunday, October 6, starting from St. Matthew Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. The Social Ministry committee hopes that you will prayerfully consider supporting this mission to help alleviate hunger in the CU area and around the world. Grace Lutheran has participated for many years, and it is as important as ever to raise money to help our vulnerable neighbors. You can help by being a walker, a donator, or both! Here’s how:

Walkers:

 1.    Find the Grace Lutheran Church, Champaign, page on the CROP Walk website (see link below). From there, you can click “Join the Team.” You can also create your own FB post to help raise awareness and money – just make sure you are a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Champaign team!

2.    Send or deliver any offline donations to the church, clearly marked for CROP Walk.

3.  The CROP Walk is scheduled for October 6, 2024, starting at 2 p.m. from St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Urbana.

4.    If you join as a participant online, you will be asked to sign an electronic waiver. If not, you may be required to sign a waiver on the day of the walk.

Donors:

1.    Visit Grace Lutheran Church’s CROP Walk page (link below) and click the “donate” button.

2.    If you don’t want to submit a donation online, you are welcome to write a check. Please make checks out to Grace Lutheran Church and write “CROP Walk” in the notes field.

Here is the link to our team page:

Plan to enjoy an outdoor activity together and raise awareness and funds for hunger issues. If you have questions, please contact Helen Repp.

Meal Train for St. Andrew's Campus Ministry

Pastor Jon Fry of St. Andrew's Lutheran Campus Center has sent a message regarding the Meal Train page for St. Andrew's Campus Ministry Meals.

His message as follows:

 Hi, everyone!

Thank you so much for being a partner in ministry with St. Andrew's! It's that time of year again, and we're very excited to welcome students back in a couple short weeks!

We are looking for individuals or congregations to help support our weekly Chat & Chow Dinner for students. There are a few ways you can help:

1) By cooking and dropping off a meal at the YMCA (1001 S. Wright St. Champaign) before 5:45pm on a Wednesday night.

2) By purchasing supplies for a crockpot or easy oven baked meal that Pr. Jon can prepare at home.

3) By donating a gift card or cash for groceries to cover a week or part of a weeks meal.

We typically feed 15-20 students on Wednesday nights. We have a variety of dietary needs, but I am always willing to work with supporters to create a veggie option that matches the meal donated.

No matter how you support St. Andrew's, I am grateful for your support as we care for students and young adults at the University of Illinois!

-Grace + Peace, Pastor Jon Fry

Prayer Requests

We have two formal ways of praying for one another at Grace. One is in the Sunday morning worship service, where we pray for people by name in the Prayers of Intercession. They will also be listed in the emailed and printed versions of GraceNotes, but not in the web version. Please send prayer requests for the Sunday-morning prayers to office@glccu.org. You may also submit prayer requests on our website at https://glccu.org/prayer-requests/.

Using GLC Facilities

Our facilities are available for use by members and by outside groups. If you would like to use any part of the facility, please fill out a Facilities Use Request, found on the web site, and contact Karen in the office to ensure that it is on the calendar, so that the space is ready for you and that you are aware of how to adjust the appropriate thermostat.

Facility Use

Pastor's Discretionary Fund

The Pastor's Discretionary Fund allows the church to offer financial assistance to people in our community. The office receives requests for help with rent, utilities, and other needs, and your donations make this important work possible!

To donate to this fund, you can give online at https://glccu.org/donate/ or by mailing a check to the church office with "Pastor's Discretionary Fund" in the memo line.
